Historical and Religious Significance: This ancient temple, dedicated to Goddess Mahamaya (Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati), stands as one of the 52 Shakti Peethas and was the presiding deity (Kosaleswari) of the ancient Daksin Kosal region, which is modern Chhattisgarh. It was built in the 12th-13t h century CE by the Kalachuri King Ratnadeva, marking the historical capital of the Kalachuris at Ratanpur. The temple complex is a serene spiritual hub beside a large water tank, offering a peaceful environment for devotees and history enthusiasts. It is also believed that pilgrims should visit the nearby Kalbhairva temple to complete their pilgrimage. Architectural Marvel and Renovation: The original structure reflects the classic Nagara style of architecture, though it has seen extensive renovations and additions over centuries, notably during the Maratha period in the late 18th century, and more recently by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The site is not just the main temple but also includes relics of ancillary temples, domes, and the old Ratanpur fort, which together narrate a millennium of history. The complex is managed by a dedicated trust that oversees its maintenance and various social activities.
