History Of Baranagar Char Bangla Temple

The Char Bangla Temple complex is a group of four small temples located in Baranagar, Murshidabad. "Char Bangla" literally means "four bungalows," and the temples are named so because of their unique architectural style, resembling hut-like structures. Built in the 18th century under the patronage o f Rani Bhabani of Natore, these temples are an exceptional example of Bengal's temple architecture. Two of the four temples have rich terracotta facades, one has incised plaster work, and the fourth one is plain. The intricate terracotta panels depict scenes from Hindu mythology, such as the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as scenes from daily life. The temples are a protected monument under the ASI and are dedicated to Lord Shiva. ###
