How To Reach Jafarganj Cemetery

Murshidabad, West Bengal, India
The Jafarganj Cemetery is a historically significant burial ground, spread over an area of about 3.51 acres within an enclosure of high, waved walls. It was established by Mir Jafar, the infamous general of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah who betrayed him in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, leading to the estab lishment of British rule in Bengal. The cemetery is located within the original complex of Namak Haram Deorhi (Traitor's Gate), where Mir Jafar's palace once stood. This cemetery serves as the final resting place for Mir Jafar and many members of the Najafi dynasty, the later Nawabs of Bengal who succeeded Siraj ud-Daulah. The tombs include those of Mir Jafar, his father Syed Ahmed, his wife Mani Begum, and other later Nawabs and their family members. The cemetery is often contrasted with the Khushbagh Cemetery across the river, which houses the graves of the former Afshar dynasty, including Siraj ud-Daulah and Alivardi Khan. The site is a poignant testament to the tumultuous history of the 18th century in Bengal. Today, the cemetery is a protected monument, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), offering a sober glimpse into the political shifts and personal lives of the rulers of Bengal. The large number of tombs, including many veiled royal women, provides a unique historical landscape.

How to Reach

By Air, Train, and Road: The approach is the same as for other sites (See Motijheel How to Reach, Serial No. 1). Jafarganj Cemetery is located north of the Nizamat Kila area.

By Local Transport: From Murshidabad Railway Station or Hazarduari Palace, the cemetery is a short ride away. It is often recommended to hire a Cycle-rickshaw or an Auto-rickshaw (Toto) for the short journey, as they can navigate the local roads easily. Ensure the driver knows the name, or mention it is near Namak Haram Deorhi for clear direction. The distance from Hazarduari Palace is about a mile (1. 6 KMS).
