How To Reach Jhumri Telaiya

Koderma India, Jharkhand, India
Jhumri Telaiya is a small town with a rich and unique history, located within the Koderma district of Jharkhand. Its name, an amalgamation of "Jhumri," an original village, and "Telaiya," the Hindi word for a small lake, hints at its picturesque origins. The town's historical significance is deeply rooted in the mica mining industry. In the late 19th century, when the British laid a railway line through the region, they discovered vast deposits of high-quality ruby mica, which led to a mining boom. Jhumri Telaiya became a thriving hub for mica production and export, attracting people from all over India and even foreign investors. This prosperity led to the town's development, with mansions and luxury cars becoming commonplace. The town's industrial past gave it a sense of dynamism and modernity that was rare for the region. However, Jhumri Telaiya's most iconic claim to fame is its unexpected connection to the world of Indian radio. In the 1950s and 60s, a strange phenomenon emerged: a disproportionately large number of song requests sent to popular radio stations like Radio Ceylon and Vividh Bharati came from this small town. This was spearheaded by a few enthusiastic residents who inspired others to compete in a game of sending the most song requests. This peculiar fad made "Jhumri Telaiya" a household name across India, forever immortalizing it in the country's cultural lexicon. The town?s reputation became so widespread that it was even mentioned in popular songs and films, solidifying its place in popular culture. Today, while the mica industry has declined, the town remains an important center in the region, known for its unique history and its blend of industrial and cultural heritage.
