Travel Tips Of Khudiya Dam

Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, India
Scenic Beauty and Engineering Utility: Khudiya Dam, officially known as the Rajiv Gandhi Reservoir, is a stunning engineering feat located in the Mungeli district. Built during the British era between 1927 and 1930, the dam was constructed by connecting three natural hills, through which the Maniyar i River flows. This unique placement creates a vast reservoir that resembles a natural lake nestled in a valley. The surrounding landscape is a lush tapestry of dense forests and small, undulating hills that offer a serene escape for city dwellers. The dam is a crucial source of irrigation for the farmers of Lormi and Mungeli, but it has also evolved into a premier eco-tourism destination. The calm, blue waters of the reservoir are perfect for boating, while the surrounding crosswalks and pathways allow for long, peaceful nature walks. The air here is noticeably cooler and fresher due to the thick forest cover. Whether you are an adventure seeker looking to camp by the water or a family looking for a quiet picnic spot, Khudiya Dam provides the perfect backdrop. The site is particularly beautiful during the sunset, when the sky turns into shades of orange and pink, reflected perfectly in the mirror-like surface of the reservoir.

Tourism Tips

Health and Safety: Be extremely careful on the dam wall, especially if the gates are open. Do not attempt to swim in the reservoir as the depth can be deceptive and there are no lifeguards.

Packing Essentials: Bring your own food and plenty of drinking water as there are limited high-quality restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the dam.

Accommodation: There are basic rest houses managed by the Irrigation Department. For better options, stay in Mungeli or return to Bilaspur for the night.

Other Topics: Ensure your vehicle has enough fuel before leaving Lormi, as petrol pumps are sparse near the dam site. Always carry a power bank as mobile network and charging points are limited.
