Travel Tips Of Madku Dweep

Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, India
Madku Dweep (Madku Island) is a historically and religiously significant river island situated on the Shivnath River. Although often associated with Bilaspur (from which it is about 40 KMS), it officially falls under the Mungeli District. The island is named after the ancient Sage Mandook and is con sidered a profound historical site, with the discovery of stone tools from the Stone Age and inscriptions in Brahmi and Shankhalipi scripts. It is famous for its concentration of temples, particularly the 19 reconstructed Shiva Temples (16 facing forward, 3 facing backward, including the five with Shivlings) built using materials from the ruins of ancient Kalchuri-era temples (11th Century). The island also houses other temples like the Hanuman Mandir, Harihara Mandir, Radha Krishna Temple, and a significant Holy Cross landmark, symbolizing a unique confluence of faiths. It is a tranquil, naturally beautiful spot, ideal for a day trip focused on history, archaeology, and spirituality.
