Double Decker Living Root Bridge

Cherrapunji (Sohra), Meghalaya, India
The Double Decker Living Root Bridge, also known as Umshiang Double-Decker Living Root Bridge, is a truly unique and breathtaking marvel of bio-engineering. It is located deep within the rainforests of Nongriat village, and reaching it requires a challenging trek of over 3,500 steps. These bridges a re not constructed but grown by the local Khasi people, who have mastered the art of training the roots of the Ficus elastica (Indian rubber tree) to form bridges over streams and rivers. The roots are guided through hollowed-out betel nut trunks, which protect the tender roots as they grow and strengthen over time. A single bridge can take up to 15-20 years to become fully functional. The Double Decker Bridge is a fascinating two-tier structure, a testament to the community's patience and profound connection with nature. The trek is arduous but incredibly rewarding, taking you through a dense forest, past serene villages, and over streams. The sound of the gushing river and the fresh air of the forest make the journey a spiritual experience. The bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolizing the harmony between human ingenuity and the natural world.

The architecture of the Living Root Bridge is entirely organic and dynamic, a form of bio-engineering unique to this region. The core structure is made of the aerial roots of the Indian rubber tree (Ficus elastica), which are trained and interwoven to create a suspended bridge. The width of the bridge can vary from 1 to 2 meters, and the length of the Double Decker Bridge is approximately 20 meters. Over time, the roots grow thicker and stronger, creating a robust and resilient structure that is capable of withstanding the region's heavy rainfall and floods. The roots are guided by simple bamboo and wood scaffolds, which are replaced every few years. The area is a living example of how indigenous knowledge and sustainable practices can create lasting and beautiful structures.
