History Of Bala Quila
The Bala Quila, literally meaning "Young Fort" (though it is one of the oldest in Rajasthan), is a massive hill fort towering majestically over the city of Alwar. Situated atop a steep hill in the Aravalli Range, the fort offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the city below. Its history is a long and complex one, dating back to at least the 10th Century when it was originally built by the Nikumbh Rajputs. The fort was subsequently rebuilt and significantly fortified by Hasan Khan Mewati in the 15th Century. Over the centuries, it changed hands numerous times, ruled by the Mughals, Marathas, and Jats, before finally being captured by Maharao Raja Pratap Singh in 1775 AD, who then established the princely state of Alwar. The fort is a formidable structure, known for its extensive fortifications stretching 5 KMS in length and about 1.5 KMS in width. It features 15 large and 51 smaller towers, along with 446 loopholes for musketry. Inside the fort complex are several historical structures, including the Nikumbha Mahal Palace (now largely in ruins), temples, and several water reservoirs (Suraj Kund, Salim Sagar). The fort's strategic location and robust architecture made it an almost impregnable stronghold throughout history. Notably, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir was allegedly exiled here for a period by his father, Akbar. The fort today stands as a glorious testament to Rajput military architecture and the rich martial history of Alwar. Due to its location within a designated forest area, it is also a part of the Sariska Tiger Reserve's Eco-Tourism Zone, adding a nature and wildlife element to its historical appeal.
