Sirpur, an ancient city on the banks of the Mahanadi River, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in India. Once the capital of the Sarabhapuriya and Panduvanshi dynasties of the Dakshina Kosala kingdom (5th to 12th centuries AD), it was a thriving center of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jai nism. The city, formerly known as Shripur ("City of Wealth"), was a major hub of learning and trade. The Chinese traveler Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) is believed to have visited Sirpur in the 7th century, describing it as a prosperous city with over a hundred monasteries and temples. The site is a treasure trove of historical and architectural wonders, including the famous Laxman Temple, ancient monasteries (Viharas), and the elevated temple complex of Surang Tila. Excavations have revealed numerous artifacts, sculptures, and inscriptions that testify to the region's rich cultural and artistic heritage. The religious tolerance of the ancient rulers is evident in the harmonious coexistence of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain monuments.
