The Chennakesava Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is the primary attraction of Belur and a breathtaking example of Hoysala architecture. Commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE to commemorate his victory over the Cholas, the temple took over a century to complete. Its star-shaped platform ( stellate plan), intricate carvings, and the sheer artistry displayed make it an architectural marvel. The temple's facade is adorned with exquisitely detailed sculptures of deities, celestial dancers (madanikas), musicians, animals, and scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana. Each carving is a masterpiece, showcasing the incredible skill and precision of the Hoysala artisans. The doorways are intricately carved with mythical creatures and floral designs. Inside the temple, the pillars are equally stunning, each uniquely sculpted. The Narasimha pillar, for instance, is said to have movable parts. The sanctum sanctorum houses a beautiful idol of Lord Chennakesava. The annual Rathotsava (chariot festival) held in March-April is a major event, attracting thousands of devotees. The temple's historical significance, architectural grandeur, and the sheer beauty of its carvings make it a must-visit for anyone interested in Indian art and history. The play of light and shadow on the intricate sculptures throughout the day adds another dimension to its beauty.
