The Seat of Gorakshanath:: The Gorakhnath Temple (Gorakhnath Math or Shri Gorakhnath Mandir) is the most significant spiritual and cultural center in Gorakhpur, after which the city is named. It is the principal Math (monastery) of the Nath monastic order, a Hindu sect founded by Guru Matsyendranath . The temple is dedicated to Yogi Gorakshanath (c. 11th Century), who is said to have attained Samadhi (enlightenment/final rest) here. Spread over a vast 52-acre complex, it is a major pilgrimage site attracting millions of devotees. The Math also plays a prominent role in the region's socio-political life, running educational and health institutions. The temple complex is a city within a city.:
