Angulimala Stupa

Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh, India
Angulimala Stupa, also known as Pakki Kuti, is a major archaeological landmark in the ancient city of Shravasti. It is named after the notorious dacoit Angulimala, who was converted to Buddhism by the Buddha. The name Pakki Kuti (Solid Hut) refers to the strong, well-built brick structure of the mo und. Some historians identify it as the "Hall of Law" built by King Prasenajit. The stupa is a massive pile of bricks that has survived for over two millennia, showcasing the architectural brilliance of the Kushana and Gupta periods. It is situated on a high mound, providing an excellent vantage point of the surrounding Mahet ruins. The legend of Angulimala’s transformation from a murderer to a monk is central to the spiritual importance of this site. Excavations have revealed various tunnels and chambers within the mound that were used for different purposes. Today, it stands as a testament to the power of forgiveness and spiritual change. Visitors often feel a sense of awe standing before this witness to ancient legends. The site is a key stop on the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit, attracting thousands of international tourists annually. It is surrounded by lush green lawns that are maintained by the government.
