Arikamedu Archaeological Site
Arikamedu is an archaeological site of paramount importance in the history of Indo-Roman trade relations. Known as the port of "Podouke" in ancient Greco-Roman texts, this site was a major hub for bead-making and trading from the 2nd century BCE to the 8th century CE. The first mention of the site w as in 1734 by a French consul, and formal excavations began in the 1940s, most notably by Sir Mortimer Wheeler. The excavations unearthed a treasure trove of Roman artifacts, including amphorae jars used for wine and olive oil, Arretine pottery, Roman lamps, and glassware. These findings provided concrete evidence of a thriving trade relationship between ancient Rome and the Tamil country. Today, what remains are mostly a few remnants of brick walls and a French Jesuit Mission House from the 18th century, but the historical significance of the site is immense. It's an open-air historical canvas, where the ruins and unearthed artifacts tell a story of a globalized world that existed millennia ago. The site is a testament to the fact that Ariyankuppam was not just a small fishing village but a bustling, cosmopolitan port that connected different parts of the ancient world.
