This sanctuary, spanning over 540 Square Kilometers, is named after the a ncient Biligiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple perched atop a white rock cliff. The name "Biligiri" translates to "White Hill" in Kannada, a reference to the mist-covered peaks and the light-colored rock formations. The sanctuary's altitude ranges up to 5,000 Feet, resulting in a diverse climate that supports everything from dry deciduous forests to evergreen sholas. Biodiversity and Culture: It is home to the Soliga tribe, an indigenous community that has coexisted with the forest for centuries. The wildlife is incredibly rich, featuring Tigers, Leopards, Asian Elephants, and the massive Gaur. It is also a premier destination for birding, with over 250 species recorded.
