Chilika Lake
Chilika Lake is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon and the second-largest coastal lagoon in the world, spanning over 1,100 square kilometers. While the primary and most famous access points are Satapada (known for Irrawaddy Dolphins) and Rambha, the "Konark side" refers to accessing the northern e nd of the lake, closer to Puri district's shore, typically through areas like Satapada or Balugaon. It is a major biodiversity hotspot and a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance. The lake's vast expanse is dotted with numerous small islands, including Nalabana Bird Sanctuary, which is a haven for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, especially during the Winter months. The ecosystem sustains a large local fishing community. The main attraction is the boat ride to spot the endangered Irrawaddy Dolphins at the confluence of the lake and the Bay of Bengal (near Satapada). Its unique mix of marine, brackish, and freshwater species makes it an invaluable natural treasure and a sublime destination for nature photography, bird watching, and serene boat cruises, providing a beautiful natural contrast to the historical sites of Konark.
