Dalmau Fort

Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, India
Details : Dalmau Fort is a majestic ruin perched on a high artificial mound overlooking the Ganga. The site is of immense archaeological importance, as the mound is believed to contain the remains of two ancient Buddhist stupas. The current structure was largely rebuilt in the 15th century by Ibrah im Shah Sharqi after he defeated the local Bhar rulers. The fort was designed to be strategically impenetrable, with its river-facing side being a sheer cliff. Over the centuries, it has served as a military outpost and a residence for local administrators. The poet Nirala often sat here, drawing inspiration from the vast horizon for his literary masterpieces. Walking through the ruins, one can see the remnants of massive walls and gateways that once stood tall against invaders. The fort provides an unparalleled view of the river's curve, making it a favorite spot for sunset watchers. Though much of the masonry has been lost to time and erosion, the foundations still speak of the grandeur that once was. It serves as a reminder of the strategic importance of the Ganga as a waterway in medieval India. The atmosphere within the fort is serene, often filled with the sound of the wind and the distant chants from the ghats below. It is a place where history and nature converge in a quiet, haunting beauty.

Fortified Masonry and Earthworks Dimension : The fort mound covers roughly 8 acres and stands 100 feet above the river. The fort features a mix of earthen ramparts and brick masonry walls. The walls were originally several feet thick, constructed using small, sturdy bricks characteristic of the medieval period. A notable architectural feature is the Baradari, or open pavilion, which sits at the highest point. This pavilion once had elaborate pillars and provided a cool retreat for the residents. The gateways are arched and massive, designed to withstand siege. Successive layers of battlements were built to buttress the structure against the eroding force of the river.
