FAQs On Ashoka Rock Edicts

Dhauli, Odisha, India
At the base of Dhauli Hill lies a large mass of rock where the famous Ashoka Rock Edicts are inscribed. These edicts, dating back to 260 BCE, are a testament to Emperor Ashoka's profound change of heart after the Kalinga War. The inscriptions, written in the ancient Prakrit language using the Brahmi script, are a set of moral and ethical instructions from the emperor to his people. They express Ashoka's remorse for the violence of the war and his new commitment to the path of "Dharma," or righteousness. The edicts are not a simple victory proclamation but a powerful declaration of his commitment to peace, welfare, and compassion for all living beings. One of the most significant carvings is a large, rock-cut elephant at the top of the edicts, which is believed to be one of the oldest rock-cut sculptures in Odisha. The elephant symbolizes the descent of the Buddha and is a powerful emblem of the emperor's new faith. A visit to the rock edicts offers a tangible connection to the past and a chance to read the very words that transformed one of history's most feared emperors into a benevolent ruler.
