The Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is a haven for nature lovers and trekkers, especially during the blooming season (March-May) when various species of rhododendrons paint the hillsides in vibrant colors. The sanctuary offers relatively easy to moderate trekking trails through dense forests of silver fir, hemlock, and rhododendrons. Key viewpoints offer stunning vistas of the Kanchenjunga range. The trek from Hilley to Barsey Guras Complex (the main tourist lodge within the sanctuary) is particularly popular.
Soreng, a bustling border town near Nepal, offers a different flavor of Sikkim. Khecheopalri Lake is a sacred lake for both Buddhists and Hindus, believed to be a wish-fulfilling lake. Uttarey serves as a quieter base for exploring West Sikkim and trekking into the Singalila National Park. The Tenzing Hillary Park and the accessibility to the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary from this side make it appealing for nature enthusiasts.
