Gurudwara Chola Sahib

Gurdaspur, Punjab, India
Gurudwara Chola Sahib is a highly revered shrine located in the town of Dera Baba Nanak. It is famous for housing a precious relic: the Chola Sahib, a sacred robe worn by Guru Nanak Dev Ji during his travels to Arab countries. This robe was brought back from Balkh Bukhara by Baba Kabli Mal, a desce ndant of the Guru. The robe is intricately embroidered and is said to have verses from the Quran and other spiritual symbols woven into it, signifying the Guru's message of universal brotherhood. Thousands of pilgrims visit every year to have a glimpse or "Darshan" of this holy garment. The Gurudwara was built to preserve this legacy and has since become a major center for Sikh pilgrimage. The town itself is situated on the banks of the Ravi River, very close to the international border with Pakistan. The spiritual aura of the place is enhanced by the continuous chanting of hymns. The site where the Gurudwara stands is historically linked to the Guru’s family, who settled here after his fourth Udasi. It is managed by the SGPC and remains a focal point for the Vaisakhi celebrations in the region.

Pilgrimage and Border View: The primary activity is the "Darshan" of the Chola Sahib, which is usually displayed behind glass. Devotees should spend time listening to the Kirtan in the main hall to experience the serenity of the shrine. After visiting the Gurudwara, a walk to the Kartarpur Corridor viewing point is essential, where one can see the Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan through binoculars. Exploring the local bazaar of Dera Baba Nanak offers a chance to buy traditional Punjabi sweets like Pinni and Ladoo. One can also visit the Thara Sahib, where the Guru used to sit and meditate. Engaging with the local history experts at the Gurudwara provides a deeper understanding of the Udasis (travels) of Guru Nanak. Taking part in the Langar service is a deeply humbling experience. For those interested in architecture, studying the marble carvings an...
