Sanctuary History and Biodiversity: Established in 1965 and declared a Tiger Reserve in 2012, Kawal is one of the oldest and most vital wildlife sanctuaries in Telangana. Spanning over 2,015 square kilometers, it forms a crucial part of the Central Indian Tiger Landscape, connecting with Tadoba in Maharashtra and Indravati in Chhattisgarh. The reserve is a mosaic of dry deciduous teak forests, bamboo groves, and vast grasslands. It serves as a major catchment area for the Godavari and Kadam rivers. The fauna is incredibly diverse, housing not just the majestic Bengal Tiger, but also leopards, Indian Gaur, Sloth Bears, and a variety of deer species like Sambar and Cheetal. For bird enthusiasts, the reserve is a paradise with over 260 species of avifauna recorded. The history of the reserve is one of conservation struggle and success, as it protects the "Dry Teak Series" of forests which are among the richest in the state. Visiting Kawal is an immersive experience into the wild heart of Deccan, where the silence is only broken by the alarm calls of deer or the rustle of dry leaves. The Jannaram forest division manages the tourism activities, offering safaris that take you deep into the core zone. It is a place dedicated to the protection of the ecosystem while providing humans a glimpse into the raw beauty of nature.
