History Of Lal Gumbaz

Sohna, Haryana, India
History and Significance: The Lal Gumbaz is a complex of twin tombs dating back to the Lodhi dynasty (pre-1570 AD), making it a significant pre-Mughal structure. Its local name, Red Dome, comes from the red sandstone used in its construction, particularly the columns of the porch. It is believed to be the tomb of a saint or an important figure of the time, constructed under the supervision of Shaikh Ahmad Niyazi and possibly built by Sher Shah Suri, though sources vary on its builder. The structure is one of the most prominent examples of Pathan architectural style in Sohna. It showcases a blend of Tughlaq and Lodhi architectural features.Present Condition: The complex includes the twin tomb and a single tomb behind it. The dome over one of the twin tombs has partially collapsed, yet the structure remains a compelling historical site.
