History Of Punasi Dam

The Punasi Dam is a significant multi-purpose river valley project located near the village of Rohani in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand. Conceived primarily as an irrigation project to benefit the surrounding agricultural lands, it is a testament to large-scale engineering efforts in the region. The dam's foundation was laid way back in 1983 during the era of the unified Bihar state. The project faced numerous administrative and land acquisition challenges over the decades, leading to significant delays and a massive cost escalation, which rose from an initial estimate of approximately ?26 crore to a staggering ?1800 crore. The dam is built across the Ajay River. Its completion marks a major milestone for the regional water resource management, aiming to provide irrigation to over eight thousand hectares of land in 106 villages of Deoghar and Devipur blocks via a Mega Lift Irrigation scheme. Beyond its utility, the massive water body and its surrounding landscape of lush green hills and forests have transformed it into a popular spot for locals and tourists. The area offers a tranquil escape, showcasing the serene beauty of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The reservoir also acts as a crucial source for future drinking water supply to Deoghar city, cementing its role as a lifeblood for the district. The government is actively working on the beautification and development of the area to enhance its tourism potential, adding facilities like approach roads and a refurbished guest house. The natural charm, combined with the scale of the structure, makes Punasi Dam a noteworthy destination near the temple city of Deoghar.
