Umden Village is a cultural treasure often referred to as the "Eri Silk Village" of Meghalaya. It is the heart of the Bhoi community and is world-famous for its unique tradition of producing "Ahimsa" or Peace Silk. Unlike traditional silk production, the villagers here allow the silkworms to comple te their life cycle and emerge from the cocoons before harvesting the silk. This non-violent method has earned the village international acclaim and the National Best Tourism Village Award. The village is surrounded by lush green tea gardens, strawberry fields, and thick tropical forests, creating a picturesque setting. Walking through Umden, you will hear the rhythmic sound of handlooms coming from almost every household. The women of the village are master weavers, using natural dyes derived from turmeric, onion skins, and local bark to create vibrant fabrics.
