How To Reach Azhimukham

Mahe, Puducherry, India
Definition and Beauty: Azhimukham, or Mayyazhi in Malayalam, literally means 'eyebrow of the Sea' or 'beautiful estuary': This picturesque location is the confluence point where the tranquil Mayyazhi River gracefully flows into the mighty Arabian Sea, offering a stunning natural vista where the blu e wavy ocean meets the rippling river, a sight of serene natural beauty that defines the town of Mahe itself, a unique district of the Union Territory of Puducherry geographically embedded within Kerala. Development and Tagore Park: The site has been aesthetically developed with the addition of a nearly 2-kilometer-long walkway along the riverbank, starting from the estuary and extending towards the Mahe Bridge, making it a perfect spot for leisurely strolls, jogging, and sunset viewing. The small and beautiful Tagore Park, named after Rabindranath Tagore, is also situated here, providing a green, tranquil space for relaxation and is particularly famous for housing the Marianne Statue, a French icon and symbol of the French Revolution, reflecting Mahe's rich colonial past, which is a major draw for visitors. Cultural Significance: At one end of the walkway near the Government House, a visual portrayal of the famous novel 'Mayyazhi Puzhayude Theerangalil' by the noted writer M. Mukundan brings the fictional characters to life, emphasizing the estuary's deep cultural and literary significance in the region, solidifying its place not just as a natural wonder but also as a literary landmark that celebrates the local history and culture of Mayyazhi or Mahe.

How to Reach

By Air (Nearest Airport) The nearest major airport is Kannur International Airport (CNN), which is approximately 35-40 KMS away. From the airport, one can hire a pre-paid taxi, an Uber, or a local cab, which takes about 1 hour to reach Azhimukham (via NH 66). Calicut International Airport (CCJ) is another option, approximately 87-90 KMS away (about 2. 5 hours drive). By Train (Nearest Station) The nearest railway station is Mahe Railway Station (MAHE), which is conveniently located, often within 2-3 KMS of the estuary. It is a well-connected stop on the Mangalore-Shoranur line, with many long-distance trains from Thiruvananthapuram, Puducherry, and Mangalore stopping here. From the station, you can take a quick auto-rickshaw to the Azhimukham walkway. By Road (Bus/Car) Mahe lies directly on the busy National Highway 66 (NH 66), making it easily accessible by road. State and private buses operate frequently from nearby major cities like Kannur (25 KMS), Thalassery (9 KMS), and Kozhikode (58 KMS). If driving, you can navigate directly to the estuary mouth, though local parking may be limited near the Tagore Park area. By Local Transport (Within Mahe) The Azhimukham is very close to the center of the small Mahe town. The best ways to reach it are by a short auto-rickshaw ride from the bus stand or railway station, or simply by taking a leisurely walk from the town center, which takes only 10-15 minutes.
