How To Reach Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary
Canacona, Goa, India:
Established in 1968, Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is Goa’s second-largest protected area, covering 86 square kilometers in the southern part of the state near the Goa-Karnataka border. It is a dense, moist deciduous forest with trees soaring up to 30 meters high, forming a near-impenetrable canopy that dramatically limits sunlight from reaching the forest floor. The sanctuary is crisscrossed by perennial streams and features diverse flora, including rare plants and medicinal herbs. While animal sightings of major predators like the leopard or tiger are rare, it is home to sloth bears, gazelles, spotted deer, wild boars, and a rich variety of birds and reptiles. The main attraction is the Nature Interpretation Centre and the 25-meter-high tree-top watchtowers.

How to Reach

By Air: Fly to Goa International Airport (Dabolim - GOI), which is approximately 80 KMS away. Hire a pre-booked taxi (approx. Rs.2,000) for the 2. 5-hour drive or take a bus to Margao and then transfer to Canacona.

By Train: The nearest major station is Madgaon Junction (MAO), about 50-55 KMS away. From Madgaon, hire a taxi or take a bus toward Canacona and then a local bus or taxi to the sanctuary entrance. Canacona Railway Station is closer but not a major stop.

By Road: Take the NH-66 highway and follow signs towards Canacona Taluka and then Khola or Khotigao. Buses run from Margao to Canacona (approx. Rs.100), and from Canacona Bus Stand, you can hire a local auto or taxi for the remaining distance.

By Local Transport: A rental scooter or bike is highly recommended for the flexibility to arrive at dawn and explore the sanctuary and its surroundings. Private vehicles are allowed inside the sanctuary after paying a fee.
