How To Reach Hunderman Village

Kargil, Ladakh, India
Historical Context and 1971 War Significance: Hunderman Village, often referred to as Hunderman Brok (Old Hunderman), is one of the most poignant and historically unique places in Kargil. It is a ghost village located right on the Line of Control (LOC), making it literally the last settlement on the Indian side of the border in this sector. The village was originally part of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) until the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, when the Indian Army captured the strategically important heights, moving the LOC further north. The villagers were relocated to a new settlement (New Hunderman), but the old village remains, frozen in time from 1971. It serves as a powerful, living outdoor museum, offering a direct view into the Pakistani side of the LOC. The Museum of Memories: The houses in Old Hunderman are built using traditional stone and mud construction, now crumbling but filled with everyday items—old utensils, rusted stoves, and fragmented belongings—left behind by the residents. These remnants offer a powerful, almost eerie glimpse into the lives of the Balti people who were displaced by war and political division. The locals who run the small visitor center often guide tourists and provide telescopes for viewing the deserted villages and military posts across the border. The village’s location provides an unparalleled panoramic view of the rugged, sparsely populated mountain range that defines the border. Visiting Hunderman is not just a sightseeing trip; it is an immersive experience in the human cost of conflict and the complex history of the Kashmir and Ladakh region. It highlights the cultural continuity of the Balti people, whose traditions span both sides of the modern border.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh (approx. 240 KMS), or Srinagar International Airport (SXR) (approx. 220 KMS). From either airport, the long road journey to Kargil is mandatory. From Kargil, Hunderman is a short, remote drive.

By Train: The site is not accessible by train. The closest major railhead remains Jammu Tawi (JAT), requiring a multi-day road journey to reach Kargil. Travelers should plan the entire trip around the road accessibility of Kargil town itself.

By Road: Hunderman Village is situated approximately 12-15 KMS north of Kargil town on a local road that branches off NH1 (the road towards Batalik and the far northern reaches of the Kargil district).

By Car/Taxi: The only practical way to reach Hunderman is by hiring a private taxi from Kargil town. Shared taxis may run part of the way, but due to its sensitive location and the quality of the final road stretch, a dedicated private cab (round trip) is highly recommended. The drive takes about 30-45 minutes one way. The road is scenic but relatively rugged in the final stretch.

Permits: While the road itself is generally open, given its proximity to the LOC, travelers should carry valid government-issued ID proofs. Foreign nationals may have stricter restrictions on travel to this area; always check with local authorities.

By Local Transport: There is no regular public bus service to Hunderman Village due to its small size and remote, sensitive location. A local shared taxi (Sumo) might sometimes ply the initial part of the route toward the Batalik sector, but for a direct, stress-free, and guaranteed return trip, hiring a dedicated local taxi is the only reliable option. The cost should be negotiated for a round-trip (including waiting time).
