Details of a 300-Year-Old Shrine: The Immaculate Conception Cathedral, locally known as Samba Kovil (a corruption of Saint Paul's Kovil), is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. This majestic structure, with a history spanning over 300 years, is one of th e oldest Catholic churches in Puducherry. The current structure was consecrated in 1791, built on the foundations of earlier churches destroyed by invaders, particularly the Dutch. It is a profound spiritual landmark and a stunning piece of colonial architecture, symbolizing the enduring presence of French and Portuguese influence. Its elegant white and blue facade, intricate interiors, and peaceful atmosphere attract both worshippers and history enthusiasts. It is an active place of worship with daily Masses held in both Tamil and English. The presence of a statue of Our Lady with the Infant Jesus in the front adds to its sacred aura.:

By Air: Nearest airport is Puducherry Airport (PNY), about 6. 5 KMS away. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available.

By Train: Puducherry Railway Station is only about 1. 3 KMS away. It is a very short auto-rickshaw ride.

By Road: The Cathedral is centrally located on Mission Street, one of the main thoroughfares. It is easily accessible by city buses, taxis, and private vehicles.

By Local Transport: A short and pleasant walk from the Promenade Beach (approx. 600m), Goubert Market, and most of the White Town area. Cycle-rickshaws are a great local option. :
