How To Reach Jagannath Temple

Ranchi, Jharkhand, India
The Jagannath Temple in Ranchi, Jharkhand, is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site, often described as a miniature replica of the much larger and more famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. Situated atop a small hillock in the Jagannathpur area, the temple offers a spectacular panoramic view of the sur rounding landscape and the cityscape of Ranchi. Its construction dates back to the 17th century, specifically completed on December 25, 1691, by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, the King of Barkagarh Jagannathpur principality. The primary deities enshrined are Lord Jagannath (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu/Shree Krishna), his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and his sister Devi Subhadra. The idols are distinctively made of wood, in contrast to the stone or clay idols found in many other parts of India, lending a simple yet profound sacredness to the shrine. The temple’s history is intertwined with the local populace, particularly the tribal communities, as it was built, in part, to provide them with a place of worship and strengthen their connection to Hindu traditions. The temple structure, which sadly collapsed in August 1990, was meticulously reconstructed and restored by February 1992, maintaining its original architectural grandeur. Its serene hilltop location makes it a dual attraction—a sacred spot for devout pilgrims and a peaceful retreat for tourists and nature lovers seeking tranquility and scenic views. The temple complex and its history symbolize the deep-rooted cultural and religious heritage of the region, attracting thousands of visitors annually, especially during its grand festivals. The blend of architectural beauty and spiritual significance makes the Jagannath Temple an unmissable landmark in Ranchi.

How to Reach

By Air:: The nearest airport is Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi. This is a major domestic airport with good connectivity to all the major metropolitan cities in India, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore. The airport is located approximately 9 KMS to 10 KMS from the Jagannath Temple. Upon landing, you can easily hire a pre-paid taxi, a ride-sharing cab, or an auto-rickshaw directly to the temple's base or, if your vehicle is small enough, up to the hilltop. The journey by road typically takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic.

By Train:: Ranchi is well-connected by an extensive railway network. The two main railway stations are Ranchi Junction (RNC) and Hatia Railway Station (HTE). Ranchi Junction is about 10 KMS from the temple, and Hatia Railway Station is slightly closer, about 7 KMS away. Both stations have frequent express and mail trains connecting Ranchi to major cities like Patna, Kolkata, New Delhi, Chennai, and Bhubaneswar. From either station, you can hire a local taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach the temple. The road journey is straightforward and well-known to local drivers.

By Road (Intercity):: Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand and is very well connected by National Highways to cities like Jamshedpur (NH-33), Dhanbad (NH-20), Patna, and Kolkata. If traveling by car or bus from a different city, you will enter Ranchi city and then follow the road signs and local directions towards Jagannathpur. State-run and private luxury buses operate frequently to and from Ranchi from neighboring states.

By Local Transport (Within Ranchi):: The Jagannath Temple is easily accessible using local transport. Auto-rickshaws are the most common and convenient mode for short distances within the city and are readily available from all major points like the railway stations, bus stands, and city center. You can also hire local taxis (both metered and app-based services) for a more comfortable journey. Local buses also run on routes that cover the Jagannathpur area, but auto-rickshaws or taxis are more direct. The temple is situated atop a hill, so the vehicle will take you to the base, from where you can climb the stairs, or a specific vehicle route will take you to the top.
