How To Reach Jonha Falls

Ranchi, Jharkhand, India
Jonha Falls, also lovingly known as Gautamdhara, is one of the most picturesque and historically rich waterfalls near Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. It is a Hanging Valley Fall, where the Gunga River hangs over its main stream, the Raru River, leading to a vertical drop. The water descends from a height of about 43 meters (141 feet), creating a spectacular, multi-step cascade, unlike the forceful single plunges of some other falls. The name Gautamdhara comes from the belief that Lord Buddha once bathed and meditated in this tranquil area, leading to the establishment of a serene Buddhist shrine and a temple nearby. To reach the base of the falls and truly experience its majesty, visitors must descend a long flight of about 722 steps, which are carved into the rocks and offer panoramic views of the surrounding lush greenery. The fall is a popular destination for nature lovers, photographers, and pilgrims seeking peace. The natural beauty of the area, combined with its spiritual significance, makes it a unique and must-visit spot on the Ranchi-Purulia Highway. It serves as an ideal picnic spot, providing a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, especially during and immediately after the monsoon season when the water flow is at its peak. The constant gurgling of the Raru River and the misty cool air at the base create a truly mesmerizing and tranquil atmosphere.

How to Reach

By Air:The nearest airport is Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi. The airport is approximately 45 KMs away from Jonha Falls. From the airport, visitors can hire a prepaid taxi or a private cab. The drive takes about 1. 5 to 2 hours depending on traffic conditions on the Ranchi-Purulia Highway and the final approach road to the falls. The taxi fare is reasonable, and it is the most comfortable option for reaching the falls directly.

By Train:The nearest major railway station is Ranchi Junction (RNC), which is about 40 KMs away. A more convenient, but smaller, station is Tatisilwai Junction (TIS) or the very local Jonha Station. Tatisilwai Junction is about 20-25 KMs from the falls, and Jonha Station is only about 1. 5 KMs away. From Ranchi Junction or Tatisilwai, one can hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw. If arriving at Jonha Station, a short rickshaw ride or walk is needed to reach the entrance of the falls. The train journey to Ranchi is well-connected from major Indian cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai.

By Road (Own Vehicle/Bus):The falls are located off the Ranchi-Purulia Road (NH-18 or similar route). From Ranchi, the distance is about 40-45 KMs. Visitors can drive their own vehicle, hire a full-day taxi, or take a local bus. The route involves traveling approximately 30-35 KMs on the highway and then taking a diversion onto a smaller road for the last 4-5 KMs to Jonha village. The roads are generally well-maintained. Public buses ply the Ranchi-Purulia route, but a shared or hired local transport (auto-rickshaw or jeep) is required for the final stretch from the highway turn-off.

By Local Transport:From anywhere in Ranchi city, the most common form of transport is to hire a pre-booked taxi for a full-day round trip, which is advisable given the remote location. Alternatively, shared jeeps or larger auto-rickshaws, often called Tempo or Auto-Tempo, are available from Ranchi towards the Purulia side up to the turn-off for Jonha Falls. From the highway, local auto-rickshaws or cycle rickshaws might be available for the final distance to the falls' entrance.
