How To Reach Kargil War Memorial

Drass, Ladakh, India
The Kargil War Memorial, also famously known as the Drass War Memorial or Vijaypath, is an emotionally charged and strategically vital monument built by the Indian Army to honour the soldiers who were martyred during Operation Vijay in the 1999 Kargil War. Located at the base of the towering Tololin g Hill and across the highway from the iconic Tiger Hill, the memorial serves as a physical testament to the bravery, sacrifice, and ultimate victory of the Indian Armed Forces in re-capturing the high-altitude posts that had been infiltrated by Pakistani troops. The site is a key feature along the NH1 and a must-visit for every traveler passing through the Drass sector. The atmosphere is one of profound reverence and patriotism. The memorial complex includes a central structure with an Eternal Flame (Amar Jawan Jyoti), a pink sandstone Wall of Heroes engraved with the names of the fallen soldiers, and the Hut of Remembrance museum, which houses photographs, war artifacts, maps, and a documentary film about the war. The entire setting is designed to immerse the visitor in the history of the conflict, allowing a direct view of the very peaks—Tololing, Tiger Hill, and Point 4875 (Batra Top)—that were the sites of the fierce battles. The memorial is the emotional and historical heart of the entire Drass Valley.

How to Reach

By Air: Nearest airports are Srinagar (SXR) and Leh (IXL). From Srinagar, the drive is approximately 140 KM via the Zoji La pass. From Leh, the drive is approximately 280 KM via Kargil (60 KM from Memorial). Hire a taxi or take a shared cab/bus on NH1.

By Train: Nearest major railhead is Jammu Tawi (JAT). From Jammu, a multi-day road journey via Srinagar is required to reach the memorial on the NH1.

By Road: It is located directly alongside the Srinagar-Leh National Highway (NH1). This is the only practical access. It is easily reachable by private car, taxi, or state-run bus from both Drass (approx. 7 KM) and Kargil (approx. 60 KM). The memorial is well-signed and unmistakable from the highway.

By Local Transport: A local taxi from Drass town can be hired for a quick return trip. Many travelers visit it as a compulsory stop on their long journey along the NH1.
