How To Reach Khetri Mahal

Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, India
Khetri Mahal, also known as the Wind Palace of Jhunjhunu or Bhopalgarh, is a stunning yet partially ruined palace built around 1770 by Bhopal Singh, the founder of Khetri town. This palace is one of Jhunjhunu's most unique historical structures, gaining its famous nickname for its numerous arches an d columns designed to allow maximum wind flow, similar in concept to Jaipur's Hawa Mahal, which it is said to have inspired. The structure stands on an elevated platform, offering a panoramic view of the old city of Jhunjhunu. Although currently in a state of disrepair, the palace?s architectural brilliance, especially its sheer size and the ingenious ventilation system, is still evident. It?s a place for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts to appreciate the forgotten grandeur of the Shekhawati royals. The intricate details of its past frescoes and the view from its top levels make it a fascinating spot to explore. It served as a relaxation retreat for the Khetri rulers.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Jaipur International Airport (JAI), located approximately 160 KMS from Jhunjhunu City Center.

From Jaipur Airport (JAI):

After landing, you have several options:

Pre-booked Taxi/Cab: This is the most comfortable and direct option, taking about 3. 5 to 4 hours. You can hire a private taxi directly to Jhunjhunu.

Bus: Take a taxi or airport shuttle to the Jaipur Bus Stand (Sindhi Camp), and then board a regular public or private bus service heading to Jhunjhunu.

By Train: Jhunjhunu has its own railway station, the Jhunjhunu Railway Station (JJN).

Connectivity: The station is well-connected to major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Sikar, and Rewari through several passenger and express trains.

From the Station: Khetri Mahal is located very close to the City Center, and is just about 2-3 KMS from the railway station. You can easily hire an auto-rickshaw (or 'tuk-tuk') or a cycle-rickshaw for a short ride to the palace.

By Road: Jhunjhunu is well-connected by a network of National and State Highways.

By Bus: Regular and efficient bus services (both Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) and private operators) connect Jhunjhunu to major cities in Rajasthan and neighboring states, including Delhi (approx. 220 KMS), Jaipur (approx. 160 KMS), and Bikaner (approx. 240 KMS). The main bus stand is centrally located.

By Car/Self-Drive: The road journey is scenic, especially from Jaipur, taking you through the heart of the Shekhawati region. The palace is in the older, central part of Jhunjhunu city, so follow local signs once you reach the city limits. Parking might be a bit challenging in the narrow lanes of the Bada Mohalla, so it is often best to park a little distance away and walk.

By Local Transport:

Auto-Rickshaws (Tuk-Tuks): These are the most common and convenient way to travel within Jhunjhunu. They are easily available from the railway station or bus stand and can take you directly to the vicinity of the palace. Bargain the fare beforehand.

Cycle-Rickshaws: A cheaper option for shorter distances, providing a slower, more authentic feel of the old city.

Walking: As Khetri Mahal is very close to the city center and the main market area, it is easily reachable on foot if you are staying nearby, allowing you to appreciate the surrounding old Havelis and streets.
