It serves as the primary source of drinking water for the entire hill station. The lake was built in 1956 AD and has since become the most s ought-after picnic spot due to its serene atmosphere. Natural Setting: Surrounded by dense, evergreen forests and walking paths, the lake offers a tranquil retreat. On one side of the lake stands the ancient Pisarnath Mahadev Mandir, adding a spiritual dimension to the natural beauty. The lake's calm waters reflect the surrounding hills and the thick forest, creating a stunning visual spectacle. Ecological Importance: Being an eco-sensitive zone, the area is rich in flora and fauna. Visitors often find themselves in the company of various bird species, especially during the early morning hours. The lake is at its fullest during the monsoon, when it overflows to create a small, temporary waterfall. Tourist Experience: It is a favorite spot for morning walks and meditation. How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai, which is approximately 100 KMS away. From the airport, you can take a private cab to Dasturi Naka, the entry point of Matheran.

By Train: Take a local train from Mumbai (CST) or Pune to Neral Junction. From Neral, you can board the iconic Toy Train (if operational) to Matheran Station or take a shared van to Dasturi Naka.

By Road: Drive via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and exit at Khopoli or Chowk toward Neral. The road is steep and winding but well-paved. Vehicles must be parked at the designated parking lot at Dasturi Naka.

By Local Transport: Since Matheran is a vehicle-free zone, you must reach the reservoir by walking, riding a Horse, or using a Hand-pulled Rickshaw. The lake is a pleasant 2 KMS walk from the Matheran Railway Station.
