How To Reach Netarhat Sunrise Point

Ranchi, Jharkhand, India
Netarhat, affectionately known as the "Queen of Chotanagpur", is a serene hill station perched on the Chotanagpur Plateau at an elevation of approximately 3,700 feet (1,128 meters) above sea level. The Sunrise Point is arguably its most famous feature, offering an unparalleled spectacle of the dawn. Visitors gather early to witness the sun rise over the densely forested hills and the misty valleys, painting the sky with a breathtaking palette of reds, oranges, and gold. The sheer scale of the panoramic view from this point is what truly captivates, often reminding visitors of the Scottish moors due to its lush, rolling landscapes and cool, bracing climate. The atmosphere is one of profound tranquility, far removed from the noise and pollution of city life. The viewpoint is intrinsically linked to the surrounding environment, which is dominated by a blend of Sal (Shorea robusta), Simul, and British-era planted Pine and Cypress forests, contributing to its consistently cool and pleasant weather throughout the year. The entire Netarhat plateau is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long and 2.5 miles (4.0 km) broad, and the viewpoint is strategically positioned on one of the highest points. The experience is not just about the sunrise; it's about the peaceful morning ambiance, the crisp mountain air, and the vast, unobstructed view of the plateau and the deep valley below. The hill station served as a summer retreat for British Governors during the colonial era, and the legacy of its scenic beauty is preserved through spots like this viewpoint and the nearby Magnolia Sunset Point. The primary view from the sunrise point extends over the Koel River Valley. The area experiences an average annual footfall of over 1,00,000 tourists, solidifying its place as a prime eco-tourism destination in Jharkhand. The sunrise is best viewed during the clear-sky months of October to March.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. The distance from Ranchi Airport to Netarhat is approximately 156 KMs to 170 KMs. The airport is well-connected with direct flights from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore. From the airport, the best way to reach Netarhat is by hiring a private taxi or pre-booked cab. The road journey takes approximately 4 to 5 hours and is scenic, passing through the undulating landscape of the Chotanagpur Plateau.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Ranchi Junction (RNC), which is approximately 154 KMs from Netarhat. Ranchi is a principal railhead and is connected to almost all major cities across India. A closer but smaller station is Lohardaga Railway Station (LOH), approximately 85 KMs away, but connectivity and taxi availability from Lohardaga are less reliable than from Ranchi. Travelers should choose Ranchi for ease of transfer. From Ranchi Junction, the remaining journey must be completed by road via taxi or bus.

By Road: Netarhat is well-connected by a good network of state and national highways, making the road journey the most convenient and scenic way to travel. Regular bus services (both state-run and private) operate from Ranchi and Daltonganj to Netarhat. The drive from Ranchi (156 KMs) takes around 4 to 5 hours. For the most comfortable journey, hiring a private or shared taxi (e. g. , SUV/Jeep) from Ranchi is highly recommended, as it allows for scenic stopovers and direct door-to-door service to your accommodation in Netarhat. The route via NH23 and then through the hills is known for its beautiful winding roads and dense forest cover, especially the final 25 KM uphill drive.

By Local Transport: Local transportation within Netarhat is limited. There are no regular auto-rickshaws or cycle rickshaws for the major sightseeing spots which are spread out (Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Waterfalls). Visitors rely primarily on the hired vehicles (taxis/cabs/jeeps) they brought from Ranchi or Daltonganj for all local sightseeing. It is highly advisable to book a vehicle for the entire duration of your stay. Occasionally, local shared jeeps or government buses ply between the main town area and a few nearby spots, but they are infrequent.
