How To Reach Padum Air Strip

Padum, Ladakh, India
The Padum Air Strip, officially designated as Air Station Padum, is a high-altitude airstrip primarily used for military, emergency, and essential civilian supply operations. It is not a commercial airport with regular scheduled passenger flights, but its existence is strategically vital, especially during the six months of winter when the road passes (Pensi La and Shinku La) are closed due to heavy snowfall, cutting off Zanskar from the rest of the world. The airstrip ensures the continuous connection of the local population to the mainland for critical supplies and medical evacuation. It is a visible landmark near the village of Pibiting, on the Padum plain, showcasing the challenging logistical realities of life in this remote region. The flat expanse of the airstrip stands in stark contrast to the surrounding jagged peaks of the Himalayas, symbolizing the efforts to overcome geographical isolation. Tourists cannot use it for commercial travel, but its location near the main road provides a reference point and a reminder of the region's geopolitical significance. Its presence is a testament to the Indian government's commitment to maintaining connectivity in this tough, high-altitude terrain, making it a critical infrastructure point.

How to Reach

By Air: The Padum Air Strip is located near Padum. It is not a commercial passenger airport. The nearest commercial airport is Leh (IXL), approx. 430 KMS away. From Leh, you must travel by road to Padum. The airstrip is exclusively for military, government, and emergency use.

By Train: The nearest major railway stations are far away in Jammu Tawi or Udhampur. No rail connection is practically possible for tourists. By Road (Access to Area) The air strip is located adjacent to the main road that connects Padum to Kargil and runs through the village of Pibiting. It is easily reached from the Padum Main Market (approx. 3-5 KMS) by this road.

By Local Transport:

Local Taxi: Hire a local taxi from Padum for a short trip to Pibiting. The driver will know the best viewpoint to see the air strip without encroaching on the restricted area.

Shared Jeep: Irregular shared jeeps or taxis ply the route from Padum to Pibiting and Karsha, which you can use for a nominal fare.

Foot/Cycle: It is an easy 3-5 KMS walk or cycle ride from the Padum town center along the relatively flat road that crosses the plain. This is the most popular, simple, and cheapest way to see the site.

Security Caution: Tourists must maintain a respectful distance from the fenced-off airstrip and the adjacent All India Radio Station, as both are secured and restricted facilities. Do not attempt to enter or climb the fences.

Best to Combine: The trip is often combined with a visit to Pibiting Monastery and Karsha Monastery as they are all on the same side of the Padum plain.
