How To Reach Tiger Hill Viewpoint

Drass, Ladakh, India
The Tiger Hill Viewpoint offers the most commanding, panoramic views of the entire Drass Valley and the surrounding war-affected high-altitude terrain. The peak itself, also known as Point 5353 for its elevation of 5353 meters (17,562 ft), is a massive, jagged mountain feature that dominated the str ategic landscape during the 1999 Kargil War. The official public viewpoint is located near the Kargil War Memorial, which stands directly below the towering peak, allowing visitors a safe yet powerful perspective. From this vantage point, one can clearly see the immense challenge faced by the Indian Army in recapturing this vital position. The hill's strategic importance lies in its direct oversight of the Srinagar-Leh National Highway (NH1), the lifeline to Ladakh. The sheer scale of the mountain is breathtaking, with its upper reaches often snow-covered even in mid-summer. The viewpoint offers an educational opportunity, as explanatory plaques and military personnel often provide context about the famous 'Operation Vijay' battle, which culminated in the peak's recapture in July 1999. The area is a place of deep national sentiment, serving as a powerful tribute to the soldiers' valor and sacrifice. The vastness of the valley visible from here emphasizes the strategic geographical layout of the conflict zone. Visitors use the viewpoint not just for its physical beauty but as a pilgrimage of remembrance and respect, connecting the historical narrative of the war with the enduring, formidable mountain landscape. The atmosphere is generally solemn and reflective, with the Tricolour flag often fluttering high on the memorial site as a symbol of victory and eternal vigil over the valley. The view at sunrise and sunset is particularly spectacular, with the mountain flanks turning various shades of gold and purple. The viewing deck itself is designed for respectful observation, providing clear sightlines toward the peak:

How to Reach

By Air: The peak viewpoint is accessible via the Kargil War Memorial, which is around 5 KMS from Drass town. Access requires a taxi from Srinagar (SXR) (140 KMS) or Leh (IXL) (270 KMS), traveling along the NH1 highway, which passes near the viewpoint:

By Train: The route involves a train journey to Jammu Tawi (JAT) and then a challenging road journey via Srinagar and the Zoji La Pass to the Drass area, where the viewpoint is located:

By Road: The most convenient route is by road along the NH1. The Kargil War Memorial (the viewpoint) is clearly marked and located directly on the highway. Travelers from Srinagar or Kargil can easily reach it by bus or taxi. The drive from Kargil is approximately 60 KMS and takes around 2 hours. Self-driving is popular but requires caution on the mountain roads:

By Local Transport: From Drass town center, the viewpoint is too far for an unguided walk. The best option is to hire a dedicated local taxi from the Drass taxi stand for a round trip. Alternatively, a shared taxi on the Drass-Kargil route will pass the memorial, but securing a return shared taxi can be difficult due to limited service, so a dedicated return is advised for convenience:
