How To Reach Traditional Maldivian Style Houses

Minicoy, Lakshadweep, India
The Traditional Maldivian Style Houses, locally known as Jaha houses, are a defining feature of Minicoy, setting it apart from the other islands in Lakshadweep. The island, known as Maliku in the local language, shares a strong cultural and linguistic connection with the nearby Maldives, which is re flected distinctly in its domestic architecture. These houses are not randomly placed but are clustered within ten meticulously planned and well-organized villages, called Avah. The architecture is an ingenious adaptation to the hot, humid, and coastal tropical climate. They are typically built using readily available natural resources like coconut palm timber, sand stone, and palm leaves for roofing. A characteristic feature is that the floor of the house is slightly raised above the ground, often resting on layers of stacked stones rather than stilts, as a precaution against dampness and ground moisture. This elevation and the use of porous materials ensure good ventilation. The houses are arranged neatly along streets, each standing in its own private enclosure, emphasizing the community's strong sense of order and cleanliness. They are renowned for their vibrant use of color, which is a signature element of Minicoy culture. The walls are often brightly painted, and the interiors are adorned with exquisitely engraved tabletops and the ubiquitous, beautifully furnished and painted wooden swing cots. These swing cots are found in nearly every home and are a symbol of the island's relaxed lifestyle. The design often allows for the extension of the house if the family grows, indicating a practical and flexible approach to residential planning. Each village also maintains a beautifully decorated village house where the community assembly, known as Baemedu, is held, signifying the strength of the village's internal self-governance under the leadership of a Bodukaka and Bodudatha. Exploring these houses and villages offers a deep dive into the unique matrilineal and seafaring traditions of the Minicoy islanders.

How to Reach

By Air:

Flight to Agatti then Sea/Helicopter: Access to the location, the villages of Minicoy, requires the standard air route: a flight from Kochi (COK) to Agatti (AGX). The subsequent, lengthy inter-island travel from Agatti (375 km) to the Minicoy main jetty is via Ship or a limited Helicopter service. This is a multi-stage journey, with the ship being the most common link.

By Train and Road:

Only to the Mainland Gateway: As an island, Minicoy has no direct train or road connection from the mainland. Visitors must first reach the port city of Kochi (Kerala) by the mainland road or rail network and then proceed via sea or air.

By Sea:

Ship from Kochi: The most direct and frequently used method is the overnight passenger ship service from Kochi to Minicoy (398 km), which is the primary vessel for most tourists. The ship docks at the island's main jetty.

By Local Transport on Minicoy:

Foot and Bicycle for Immersion: The Traditional Maldivian Style Houses are spread across the island's ten villages (Avah). Once on Minicoy, the best way to explore the houses and appreciate the village architecture is on foot or by Bicycle. The villages are close to each other, and walking allows for a slow, intimate immersion into the culture and the orderly layout of the streets. A local Tempo can be used to travel between the more distant villages (e. g. , from the south to the north), but walking within the villages themselves is highly recommended. The overall distance covered during a village walk is generally minimal.
