How To Reach Tura Bazaar

Tura, Meghalaya, India
Tura Bazaar is the primary commercial and economic lifeline of the West Garo Hills district, serving not just the people of Tura but also numerous surrounding villages and towns across Meghalaya and even bordering areas of Bangladesh. It's a bustling, vibrant hub of activity that vividly displays th e local Garo culture, especially on market days. The bazaar is generally a collection of shops, permanent establishments, and temporary stalls that spring up to sell everything from fresh produce, local spices, traditional Garo handlooms, garments, and bamboo crafts to modern electronic goods and hardware. Unlike a sterile, modern mall, the bazaar offers an authentic, sensory experience where the air is filled with the aroma of freshly harvested fruits and vegetables, the chatter of bargaining locals speaking Garo and other local dialects, and the sight of unique tribal ornaments. It is an essential stop for anyone wanting to understand the local economy and social rhythm. The market acts as a cultural melting pot, where different communities converge, exchange goods, and share news, making it much more than just a place of transaction. Visitors should be prepared for crowds and a fast pace, as this is where the daily life of Tura truly unfolds. The products are often sourced directly from the surrounding hills, ensuring freshness and authenticity. This deep connection to the land and its agricultural produce is a defining feature of the bazaar, solidifying its role as the economic and cultural pulse of the Garo Hills. Its location is central to all major transport routes, ensuring constant, easy access, which is why it remains the undisputed center of trade for the entire region. This rich commercial heritage makes the market a fascinating subject for cultural studies and casual observation.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, approximately 220 KMS away. From GAU, one must hire a private taxi (a journey of about 5-6 hours) or take a shared Sumo cab, which is a budget-friendly and local option. The journey is scenic as the route transitions from the Assam plains into the Garo Hills.

By Train: Tura has no railway station. The nearest major railhead is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY), approximately 220 KMS away. After reaching GHY, travelers should proceed to the Paltan Bazaar area or ISBT Guwahati to catch a shared Sumo or a long-distance bus directly to Tura. This road segment takes about 6-7 hours. The railway connectivity provides access from major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai.

By Road: Tura is well-connected to Guwahati via NH17 and to Shillong (323 KMS) via state highways. Regular bus services are run by the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) and private operators from Guwahati's ISBT. Shared Sumo taxis are the most popular and frequent mode of transport, offering a quicker and slightly more comfortable alternative to the bus. The road journey into Tura via the winding hill roads is picturesque.

By Local Transport: Within Tura, the Tura Bazaar is easily accessible by walking from the city center. For longer distances within the town, shared or private auto-rickshaws and local taxis (often shared Maruti 800s or small cars) are readily available. The local transport system is efficient but very basic.
