Kabrapahad

Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, India
Kabrapahad is a world-renowned archaeological site famous for its prehistoric rock paintings. Located on a hill that appears "spotted" from a distance (hence the name "Kabra" which means spotted), it sits at an elevation of about 100 feet. The site contains a massive rock shelter with a width of 50 feet, where early humans depicted their lives through art. These paintings, created using red ochre, date back thousands of years to the Mesolithic and Chalcolithic periods. The artwork features a variety of subjects, including wild animals like Bison, Tortoise, and Deer, as well as human figures and complex geometric patterns. It provides an invaluable insight into the hunting-gathering lifestyle of our ancestors. The hill itself is a part of the Vindhyan range and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys. Reaching the rock shelters requires a short but steep trek, making it a favorite for history buffs and adventure lovers. The government of Chhattisgarh has taken steps to protect these ancient drawings from weathering and vandalism. The silence of the hills combined with the ancient art creates a mystical atmosphere. It is one of the most significant rock art sites in Central India, comparable to Bhimbetka. The intricate details of the animal figures suggest a high level of artistic skill among the prehistoric inhabitants of Raigarh.
