Kanwar Lake Sanctuary

Mithila, Bihar, India
Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary, also known as Kabartal, is a premier ecological site in Mithila, India. Spanning across thousands of hectares, it is the largest freshwater oxbow lake in Asia and was declared a Ramsar Site in 2020. The lake was formed by the meandering of the Gandak river centuries ago. It serves as a vital wintering ground for over 60 species of migratory birds flying in from Central Asia and Siberia. Ornithologists like Salim Ali have historically praised the biodiversity of this wetland. The sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers, who can spot rare species like the Oriental White-backed Vulture. The lake also supports a large variety of fish and aquatic plants, making it a critical ecosystem for the region. Visiting Kanwar Lake offers a chance to see nature in its purest form, away from the concrete jungles. The local community is deeply involved in the conservation of the lake, though it faces challenges from seasonal drying and agricultural encroachment.
