Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary
Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary is a sprawling protected area that covers approximately 35 square kilometers of dense subtropical forest. It is one of the most important ecological sites in Southern Mizoram, serving as a sanctuary for a wide variety of endangered species. The sanctuary is characteriz ed by its steep, rugged terrain and deep valleys, which have kept the core areas relatively untouched by human interference. It is home to the majestic Leopard, the Himalayan Black Bear, and the Barking Deer. Bird enthusiasts flock here to see the rare Great Indian Hornbill and the Mrs. Hume's Pheasant. The flora is equally impressive, with a massive variety of bamboo, medicinal plants, and ancient trees draped in moss and orchids. Historically, the area was the site of a tragic massacre in the 19th century at the old Khawnglung village, adding a layer of historical intrigue to the natural beauty. The sanctuary is managed by the Mizoram Forest Department, which maintains several trekking trails for eco-tourists.
