Kings Palace Ruins
The Kings Palace Ruins, also known as the Rabdentse Ruins, represent a significant chapter in the history of the erstwhile Kingdom of Sikkim. This archaeological site was the second capital of the kingdom from 1670 to 1814, established by the second Chogyal (King), Tensung Namgyal. The capital was shifted here from the original seat at Yuksom to provide a more central and defensible location. For over a century, Rabdentse flourished as a center of power and spirituality until it was tragically destroyed by the invading Gurkha army from Nepal in the early 19th century. Today, the site is protected and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), offering visitors a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into a lost era.
