Mullers Tank

Godda, Jharkhand, India
Mullers Tank is a significant historical landmark that serves as a reminder of the British administrative era in Godda. Constructed during the tenure of Fredrick Max Muller, a British officer (not to be confused with the famous Indologist), this large man-made lake was designed to provide a steady water supply to the growing township and to manage the local groundwater levels. Over the decades, it has evolved from a functional utility into the social hub of the city. The tank is surrounded by paved walkways and old-growth trees, making it the most popular spot for morning and evening walks among the residents of Godda. The reflection of the sunset on the calm waters creates a tranquil atmosphere in the middle of the bustling town. It also serves as a center for religious activities, particularly during the Chhath Puja, when thousands of devotees gather on its ghats. The local municipality has recently added seating arrangements and lighting, making it a safe and pleasant environment for families. The tank also supports a local fishing community, and one can often see traditional fishing nets being cast in the early hours of the morning. It represents the "lungs" of Godda city, providing much-needed green space and a cooling effect during the hot summer months.
