Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve

Nagarkurnool, Telangana, India
The Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR) is the largest tiger reserve in India, spanning across five districts, with a significant portion lying in the Nagarkurnool district of Telangana. Covering a staggering area of approximately 3,728 Square Kilometers, the reserve is a biodiversity hot spot nestled within the rugged Nallamala forest range. The core area of the reserve is around 1,200 Square Kilometers, providing a pristine habitat for the Bengal Tiger and a plethora of other wildlife species. The terrain is characterized by deep plateaus, winding valleys, and the majestic Krishna River which cuts through the reserve for nearly 130 KMS. Historically, the northern part of this forest was used as a private hunting ground for the Nizams of Hyderabad. Today, it serves as a critical conservation zone under Project Tiger, which was initiated here in 1983. The reserve is not just about tigers; it is home to leopards, sloth bears, dholes, and endangered species like the Indian Pangolin. The flora is primarily southern tropical dry deciduous forest, featuring trees like Teak, Anjan, and various bamboo species. For the eco-tourist, the reserve offers a rare glimpse into the wild heart of the Deccan, where the hills of Srisailam and Amrabad meet. The Amrabad Tiger Reserve section, specifically within Nagarkurnool, has become a major hub for wildlife safaris and nature education. The region is also culturally rich, housing ancient rock shelters and cave temples like Akka Mahadevi Bhilam, which adds a spiritual dimension to the wilderness. Protecting this vast landscape is a massive undertaking involving the local Chenchu tribes, who have lived in harmony with these forests for generations. :
