Nokrek National Park

Tura, Meghalaya, India:
Nokrek National Park, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009, is an ecological and biodiversity hotspot situated in the heart of the Garo Hills. It is one of the most significant protected areas in Northeast India. The park's main feature is the Nokrek Peak, the highest peak in the Garo Hills at an elevation of about 1,412 meters. The park is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna, making it a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts and researchers. It is famously the last refuge for the critically endangered Red Panda in Meghalaya. Other notable inhabitants include the Asian Elephant, the elusive Clouded Leopard, the Hoolock Gibbon (the only ape species found in India), various species of deer, and a rich variety of birdlife. Nokrek is also globally significant as the origin and natural habitat of Citrus Indica (the wild cousin of the orange), which led to the establishment of the National Citrus Gene Sanctuary within the park's buffer zone to protect this progenitor plant. The park's terrain is rugged, characterized by steep slopes, dense forests, and numerous perennial streams and rivers, including the origin of the Simsang (or Someshwari) river. The vast, undisturbed evergreen and semi-evergreen forest cover provides an ideal ecosystem for its inhabitants and offers spectacular natural beauty.
