Religious Significance:The Nechung Monastery in Dharamshala is the exiled seat of the Nechung Oracle (Dorje Drakden), the State Oracle of Tibet and the protector deity of the Dalai Lamas and the Tibetan Government since the 18th Century. The original monastery in Lhasa was destroyed, and this comple x was built starting in 1977 to continue the tradition.The Oracle Tradition:The monastery is central to the ancient Tibetan tradition where a medium (the Kuten or physical base), currently a monk, enters a trance-like state, allowing the protector deity to possess his body and provide guidance, predictions, and advice on matters of state to the Dalai Lama and the Kashag (Cabinet).Architecture and Community:The complex includes a temple, a library, a school, and residences for the monks. It is a vital center for the Tibetan Buddhist community and a place of significant pilgrimage due to its religious importance and colorful, traditional aesthetic.
