The Rajnagar Fort, also known as Navlakha Palace, is a magnificent ruin that stands as a haunting reminder of the grandeur of the Darbhanga Raj, a prominent landlord dynasty of the Mithila region. Built by Maharaja Rameshwar Singh in the early 20th century, the palace was a lavish and sprawling comp lex that was said to have cost over nine lakh rupees, earning it the name "Navlakha Palace." The complex included several buildings, including the main palace, temples, a guesthouse, and a hospital. The palace was a marvel of its time, with intricate carvings and a blend of different architectural elements. However, the palace was severely damaged in the devastating earthquake of 1934, and it has since been left to ruin. Today, the ruins of the palace, with its broken arches and fallen walls, tell a story of a lost era. Despite its dilapidated state, the palace complex, with its numerous temples, is a popular destination for tourists and devotees. The Kali Temple, in particular, is a stunning structure made of white marble and ivory, which resembles the Taj Mahal. The fort is not just a ruin; it is a historical landmark that embodies the cultural and architectural heritage of the Mithila region. The tranquil atmosphere of the ruins, with the lush greenery growing around the broken walls, provides a unique and poignant experience.
