Pipli Applique Village
Pipli is a world-famous artisan village located at the crossroads of Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Konark. It is the heart of the ancient Applique craft, locally known as Chandua. This craft involves stitching various colored fabric shapes onto a base cloth to create intricate patterns. Originally, the cr aft was developed to provide decorative umbrellas (Chhatris) and canopies (Chanduas) for the Lord Jagannath temple in Puri. Today, the entire main street of Pipli is a riot of colors, with hundreds of shops displaying vibrant wall hangings, lampshades, handbags, and garden umbrellas. The village was reportedly established by the King of Puri in the 11th Century to settle the craftsmen. Interestingly, the craft is a beautiful example of communal harmony, as both Hindu and Muslim artisans work together to create pieces used in religious festivals. Walking through the narrow lanes, one can see artisans meticulously cutting cloth into motifs of birds, animals, and flowers. Pipli is not just a shopping destination; it is a living museum of Odisha's textile heritage. Every piece tells a story of tradition, patience, and artistic evolution.
