Raghurajpur Artist Village
Place Details: Raghurajpur is not just a village; it is a living museum of Odisha’s rich artistic heritage. Located just 10 KMs from Puri, every single household in this village is inhabited by artists. The village is world-famous for Pattachitra, an ancient form of scroll painting done on cloth o r dried palm leaves. The artisans here have preserved techniques that date back to the 5th century BC. As you walk down the two main streets, you will see houses with beautifully painted murals on their outer walls, depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Apart from Pattachitra, the village is a hub for stone carving, wood carving, papier-mâché masks, and cow dung toys. This is also the birthplace of the legendary Odissi dancer Padma Vibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra. The village has been designated as a 'Heritage Village' by INTACH to preserve its unique culture. Visitors can enter the homes of artists, watch them work, and even try their hand at painting. The atmosphere is quiet, creative, and deeply traditional. It is one of the few places where you can buy authentic art directly from the creator, ensuring fair trade and a personal connection. The surrounding groves of coconut and betel vines provide a quintessential rural Odia backdrop. It’s a place where art is not a profession but a way of life, passed down through generations with immense pride and precision.
