Tourism Tips

Health & Safety - Acclimatization: Drass is at approximately 10,800 feet (3,300 meters). Take time to acclimatize; walk slowly, hydrate frequently, and carry basic medication for headache or nausea. If traveling from lower altitudes, spend a night in Srinagar or lower regions first.Packing - Warm Clothing: Even in Summer (June to August), mornings and evenings are extremely cold. Pack thermal wear, heavy woolens, insulated jackets, gloves, and a woolen hat. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential due to the high-altitude sun.Accommodation - Best Base: While basic guesthouses and homestays are available in Drass town, most tourists prefer to stay in Kargil Town (60 KMS away), which offers more hotel choices and amenities. Booking well in advance for the peak season (June-September) is crucial.Respect and Conduct: Maintain absolute silence and decorum. The memorial is an active military site and a place of deep national reverence. Do not cross any marked 'Restricted' areas. Photography is generally allowed but ask the stationed personnel if there are any specific, temporary restrictions.Permits and ID: Always carry valid photo identification (Aadhaar/Passport/Driving License) and a copy of your travel itinerary, as the area is close to the Line of Control (LoC) and military checks are frequent and mandatory.Fuel and Supplies: Fuel stations are limited; fill your tank in Kargil or Srinagar. Carry sufficient cash, as digital payment infrastructure and ATMs can be unreliable in remote areas.
