Health is a top priority: The upper valley reaches high altitudes (e.g., Pensi La at 4,400m), making severe Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) a risk. Acclimatize properly in Kargil for a day or two before venturing deep into the valley. Do not hike on glaciers or near river rapids without a professional guide. River rafting must be done with certified operators.
Packing (Extreme Layers and Camping Gear):
Packing is key: Bring extreme warm layers (thermal underwear, down jackets, windproof outer shells), even in summer, as the temperature can drop drastically, especially overnight. Carry sun protection (high-SPF, hat, gloves). If camping, ensure your tent and sleeping bag are rated for sub-zero temperatures at the high-altitude sites like Rangdum.
Accommodation (Camping and Local Guesthouses):
Accommodation options are diverse: comfortable hotels in the lower valley (Sankoo), basic guesthouses/homestays further up (Panikhar), and organized tented camps near Rangdum.
Tip: Stay overnight to fully appreciate the views and the stars. Book ahead, as remote options are limited.

Tip: For trekking and mountaineering, ensure all permits are secured well in advance. Refuel your vehicle in Kargil; petrol stations are non-existent in the upper valley. Respect the deep Shia Muslim faith of the locals and dress modestly, especially when visiting Imambaras and villages. Bring cash, as digital payments are unavailable.
